Ayers Rock Camping Day 3

Day 13 - Ayers Rock Camping Day 3

Ayers Rock

Ok, so my alarm went off on my iPhone at 5:15. I had put the phone in my shorts pocket and then rolled up my shorts and put them in my swag. This meant that when my alarm went off I couldn't find the phone so I think we all woke up at 5:15! I went for a shower but there was no electricity in the men's shower block so it was pitch black. Fortunately we had taken a couple of wind up torches and so I managed ok.

After brekky (a good brekky - really nice coffee drunk from tin mugs, cereals and toast) we headed off to King's Canyon arriving just before dawn.

We set off with no messing about and walked the path up so-called heart-attack hill, aptly named as it was virtually straight up. We got right to the top and Jason guided us onto a rocky outcrop and we watched the sun rise over the edge of the canyon. It was truly beautiful.

After we had had our fill and taken another million photos we continued our walk around King's Canyon. It is an amazing place the scenery is stunning and we all said it matched Uluru for the wow factor. There are loads of places where you can stand as close as you dare to sheer drops of several hundred feet. Jason told us loads about the plants and rocks etc. There are water holes which are permanently full and one (The Garden of Eden) where you can swim but the water was too cold today although Johann and I did dip our feet in.

We finished our walk then headed back to Kings Creek Station for a lunch of burgers and salad and after that we started our journey back to Alice Springs (about 500km).

We had a few stops - one to see a brown snake in the road, number 7 on the list of most deadly snakes but lucky for us, dead - another to see a group of emus wandering past. We stopped at an aboriginal art gallery and Wendy bought the piece of art she has been looking for.

Later in the journey, Wendy spotted some kangaroos but I wasn't quick enough to turn round and missed them. I was a bit disappointed as I had been roo-spotting for 3 days and not seen any and just happened to be looking the wrong way!! We drove the last Kms into Alice arriving back at about 7. We had agreed to go out to Bo-Jangle's for dinner as a group at 8, so we quickly got ready and headed out. The others were all there apart from Lee and Suzanne, who arrived a bit later. Jason had the "Big Bugger", a 800 gram steak which he proceeded to see off in about 3 minutes. We Wilkos each had the Australia mixed grill which was buffalo, crocodile, kangaroo and camel. I shared with Wendy and the three girls shared two grills with Johann and Max. I have to say Jason's steak looked nice (and big). After the meal we had a whip round and collected a tip for Jason then headed off home, completely whacked.

  1. Lovely photos in a very photogenic place. Worth the early rise and strenuous walk I'm sure. Sue x
