Kuranda

Day 17 - Kuranda

Kuranda

Monday, 8 August 2011

During the night I got a phone call from an unknown UK number at about 3am. When I answered, it was a man who asked me if we had a black cocker spaniel because they had found Eddy outside the post office in Great Witley. He seemed a bit surprised when I told him I was in Australia! I phoned Rach and Tom and it seems that Eddy has discovered a hole in their fence and had decided to explore his surroundings. Tom suspects there may be a lady dog nearby that he might be interested in. All's well that ends well, as Tom was able to go round to the post office and pick him up. When I first got the phone call I think I was still half asleep as my first thought was "how on earth has Eddy got to Australia?!"

After speaking to Tom and making sure Eddy was safe, we got back to sleep, then up again at 6:15 to get ready for our day in Kuranda.

Kuranda is a market village in the Australian rainforest at the top of a mountain. We caught the train from Freshwater, just north of Cairns. It is an olde worlde train which winds its way up the mountain side wth great views. Kuranda is a bit touristy but a fun place with some fairly bohemian market places. Lizzi had her hair braided. I tried to play the didgeridoo in several different shops but all of them seemed to be broken too.

Whilst Lizzi was having her hair braided, I got chatting to an old boy who was quadriplegic in a wheelchair and was raising cash by selling his life story and joke books he had written. I couldn't resist swapping a couple of jokes. Sadly, he had heard mine (who hasn't?) but this is the one he told me: "Why did it only cost Captain Jack Sparrow $2.00 to have his ears pierced? Because......he was a buccaneer!" Boom Boom.

We came down from Kuranda on the Sky Rail which is a gondola with two stations to stop at in the rainforest, both with forest boardwalks, the second with a ranger (Phil). The ranger gave us a guided tour round through the rainforest along the boardwalks. He was great.

When we got to the bottom we picked up our car and drove back to the hotel stopping at Coles supermarket to pick up supplies on the way.

Chicken Salad for tea and now everyone is asleep other than Jess and me. Jess is typing this log and I am dictating which makes me realise how slow I am at typing!

We're off to Hartley's Crocodile Farm and Zoo tomorrow.

Goodnight.

  1. Cool hair Lizii - good colour choice for the braid. I bet the rain forest was spectacular - particularly on the gondola. We took Tom on that on his 2nd birthday - but he won't remember a thing! Sue x

  2. Talk to any surfer who's been out on the waters and they will say it feels like flying without wings. Fiji is a very special place for surfing, if for no other reason then surfing is given fresh life here. Amateur-friendly waters are widely accessible, so let experienced surfers have a go at coral-filled zones. You will find some very interesting services available with most of these companies, like surf tours and surf safaris. Make sure to try a surf lesson at the Mango Bay Surf School. There are plenty of factors, including safety and basic drills that can make surfing a bit pricey in some Fijian locations, but the overall worth of what you get with the opportunity to surf in Fiji is priceless. kitesurfing
