Port Douglas

Day 16 - Port Douglas

Port Douglas

Sunday, 7 August 2011

After breakfast we drove down to Palm Cove Resort and beach and had a walk along the sand. Afterwards, we drove into Cairns to check out the reef trips. The weather was windy and overcast but still quite warm, not exactly what we were expecting. We then drove up the coast to Port Douglas passing loads of deserted beaches, and spent a very nice afternoon exploring the shops around the centre and the marina. Just before this we had been to four mile beach which was pretty well deserted. At first I thought this was because the weather wasn't great but when I spoke to the lifeguard he told me that a crocodile had been seen on the beach last wednesday and this had "freaked people out". Lizzi and Anna still went paddling but tried not to look like croc food.

We had lunch at the 'Hogs Breath Cafe' and the waiter recommended a boat trip on the 'Lady Douglas' which is owned by a couple of ex-pats who gave us drinks and nibbles and then took us out up the mangrove swamps looking for crocodiles. We saw 2 resting near the bank. We also saw a couple of sea eagles and a kite which took fish thrown from the boat. I'm pretty sure they get fed every trip as they seemed to know when to arrive!

After the boat trip we had a wander along the high street, had a quick drink at a restaurant/bar called Salsa, then headed for home. Pasta for tea, then bed.

Fancy a swim?!
